Dealighted.com Founder's Last Minute Holiday Shopping Tips
December 13, 2010 - Scott Wainner, Founder & CEO, Dealighted.com
Waiting until the last minute to finish up your holiday shopping? Not to worry (I am too). Here's how to find the best deals and ensure that your gifts arrive on time and hassle free.
Happy Shopping!
There are lots of great online deals this year, particularly on Laptops, Flat Screen TVs (42" LCD for about $450), and eBook Readers (Kindle for about $125 after coupon at Staples, or iPad for $499). If you already have an iPad, check out Pulse, now free in the Apple Store -- Pulse is the reader I use every day to visually digest all of my news and feeds.
- If you know that you want a product category in general, but not a specific product, search Dealighted for the basic name or brand, such as digital camera or Dell Notebook or HDTV. This way, you'll find the best online deals if you're not picky about the model.
- If you are picky about the model, use our price comparison engine to compare prices on a specific product at online stores.
- Check the shipping policies of the retailer (usually a link at the bottom of their page). If they don't publish a shipping table, like this one at Amazon.com, then don't buy from that store if you're trying to get the item in time for Christmas.
- Pay attention to return policies at retailers - for instance, Zappos.com offers a 365 day return policy with free shipping BOTH ways. That's great, and rare, so know what you're getting into. If you think a recipient might need to return the product, see what other consumers think about the store's return practices by searching for the store's review page at ResellerRatings, then click the "Show Category Ratings" link to see how that store rates for returns.
- The closer you get to Christmas, the more important it is to buy from a reputable store. Disreputable stores with bad ratings can really jerk you around. Their website might show a product in stock, when it's actually on backorder for 6 weeks. Stick to stores that have excellent ratings and if your gut says no, don't do it! It isn't worth the hassle or the potential for disappointment for the chance of saving a few dollars shopping at a poorly rated store at the final hour.
- Always always always shop online using a credit card (preferably not debit, and certainly not check, cash, wire transfer, or even Paypal unless it's funded 100% by a credit card, if you can avoid it). If you don't get your merchandise, your credit card company will likely refund you and go to bat for you.
- If you're ordering from a small retailer (not a huge retailer like Amazon, Buy.com, Bestbuy), call them (yes, with a phone!) the next day to make sure they are processing your order. Don't assume that they're on top of it because if there's a problem and you wait, it'll be too late to find that item somewhere else.
- Too late to buy online? Not to worry, you can still use online tools to help get the best price and make sure the local store even has the product you seek. Milo.com, which shows realtime local store inventory and pricing across a variety of stores, is your last minute shopping friend.
Happy Shopping!
