Get out of your DirecTV contract for FREE

Just call DirecTV at 1-800-531-5000, reference "4. CHANGES IN CONTRACT TERMS" in the DirecTV contract and state you do not accept the changes detailed in the contract change notification that take effect February 9, 2010.

Don't say you want to cancel because your canceling incurs the Early Cancellation Fee (ETF), instead, simply state you do not agree to the change in contract terms and they will be forced to end your contract as they can not provide one customer different terms than another. If they don't listen to you, send a certified letter stating you do not agree to the terms. Remember *not* to say you wish to cancel, only that you do not agree to the change in terms and conditions.

Default Still available?

Is this "opportunity" still an option? I have been trying to cancel my DirecTV for almost a year now. Keep getting the run-around. One person actually told me if my issue was not resolved, they would cancel it without charging fees. However, they cannot find those notes to confirm that is what I was told.

The initial issue was that I had moved. The place I moved into only allowed dishes to be mounted to the roof of the 3 story building. DTV installers can't climb that high and get onto the roof due to insurance policies. So, they could not do a proper install. My account was put on hold for 6 months pending a search for other options... which none came to light. Now, the building managers have changed dish policies so that I can have a dish installed on my balcony. I am in a basement apartment with a balcony that faces North. I have no view of the Southern horizon.

So, if this policy change denial is still an option at this point (six months after it went into effect), please let me know!
