Heard about this on the radio. Honestly I was a bit hesitant about posting this. I suppose it could be good if you shop at Kroger and buy Kroger gas often enough. Figured I'd give people the heads up about the new fuel points program. Hopefully it's a money saver for some people. Smilie

I'll have to crunch the numbers to see if this makes sense for me. Probably not. But it's interesting to see what the latest Kroger schemes are, so I appreciate the post.

Looks like you would have to spend $1150 a year to break even on this. So if you spend more than $100 a month at Kroger your in the green

You also have to reach increments of 1k points in order it to be worth. 999 points is pretty worthless.

If you've got a Costco in your area, you're much better off purchasing a yearly membership from them and getting their already cheap gas instead of buying into Kroger's Fuel point scheme. $100 a month spent to save $.10 off a gallon, or half that amount spent with this membership. Total scam.

Unfortunately it only applies to groceries, not gift cards. Kroger fuel points are great when they have 4x on gift cards but this here doesn't look likely to earn your money back.

It is not a good deal, it is a way for Kroger to get unsuspecting customers to spend money they don't need to spend for extra fuel points. Yes it sounds like a great idea at first, $40 a year to earn double fuel points all year, that is only $3.34 a month. But to break even on what you spent you need to earn $6.68 a month in fuel savings (as you already earn 1 for every dollar spent). Doesn't seem like that would be difficult however it is 100 fuel points for $0.10 off. So in order to get $6.68 in savings every month you would need to earn 6680 fuel points, at 2 points for every dollar that is $3340.00 a month in groceries. And yes there are many restrictions for earning the fuel points, alcohol and tobacco do not count, most gift cards do not unless it is in a promotion, there are others. I work for Kroger's and refuse to recommend anyone sign up for this, especially the customers at my store, most are elderly and on fixed incomes. Do not signup for this and don't let your families do it either. It is a huge ripoff.

That's $0.10 off per gallon of gas purchased. If you buy 100 gallons of gas per month, that's a savings of $10 in one month. This appears to be a better deal than what you are suggesting.

Here's some realistic math. I'm family of 4, regularly shop at Kroger.

Spend $400 per month at Kroger on food, and 45 gallons a month of gas. Bonus points per month from this offer: 400. For 45 gallons, that's a bonus savings of 40c * 45 = $18/month. That's a savings of $18 * 12 - $40 = $176 a year. Double that to a more realistic 30 gallons or more, as you can share with family members or whoever, and you can easily save $350+/year.

Obviously if you already shop elsewhere it's not great, but if you do then this deal is certainly slick.

Keep in mind that 100 fuel points earns $0.10 off per gallon. So if you put 15 gallons in the tank, 100 fuel points gets you $1.50.

If you're spending $250 a month on groceries and you fill up at 15 gallons, you were saving $3.00 on gas (because only 200 of the points can be used). On this program, the 250 fuel points would double to 500 fuel points, saving you $7.50 on gas or an extra $3.50 which covers your cost.

Not everyone spends $250 on groceries or needs the gas, so agree it isn't for everyone. But the deal is a fair bit better than you were describing.

The value of this program lies in family use, especially for larger families with several / many cars... Kroger allows up to 35 gallons per discounted fill-up, which is the largest quantity of gallons I am aware of compared to the competition. So, if you bring 2 vehicles to fill-up the combined savings is greater. We use the full 35 gallons & pump it into 2 or 3 cars at one time. Some bring gas cans with them & that is smart, if you are safe, careful, & knowledgeable. Most cars hold between 15 & 20 gallons, so be sure to try to calculate & coordinate your discounted fill-ups or bring 2 or 3 cars & or gas cans... Some vehicles (especially Full-Size Trucks) often have 35 gallon gas tanks. Hope this helps. It's a good program for those who live close to a Kroger & have multiple cars / Full-Size Trucks & or they just drive a lot of miles... E.G. Rideshare Drivers...
