Rheem 50 gallon tall electric water heater on clearance at Home Depot - YMMV $495

Since Home Depot has officially discontinued this Performance Platinum 50 gallon electric tall model and replaced it with the newer Rheem Gladiator water heater, it is a little tricky to provide links to the product. The HD website and Brickseek show the product, but not the price, so I am calling this YMMV, however I found it at multiple stores in the Austin, TX area for $495 and believe it may be that price at many other stores. Original price was $619, and that is the replacement model price at HD.

Brickseek link to show stock, but not price:

I believe this is the Rheem page on this model:
https://www.rheem.com/product/pro...-rh95-ec2/

This model includes automatic water sensing alarm (warns of leaks) and can be linked to wifi as a smart appliance and at this price is cheaper than the next closest dual 5500W 50 gal tall electric water heater. Seems like it makes sense to get the extra bells and whistles if this size fits your needs, even if you don't want to link it to wifi.

Even the reviews on the Rheem site are not good. Best avoided methinks.

The HD site reviews have it at 4.4 stars. Good enough to take a chance when most of the complaints are infant mortality issues or well under the 3 year full parts/labor warranty and 12 year parts warranty period. There are very few reviews on the Rheem site and one of the one star reviews is for a hybrid model, which is not even this product. Another 1 star review was for a problem that was likely fixable with some teflon tape on the (brass) drain valve.

15% of total reviews are 1 star that is not good. Even if in the warranty period a water heater is not something you want to be failing and not having hot water for days.

My father works plumbing at HD and sells these. Or is supposed to, anyway. He sees these come back with problems and actually recommends not buying Rheem at all. Even though he works at HD, he makes us go buy A.O. Smith from Lowes for all of our investment rentals, even though they are more expensive, as those seem to be better built and last longer. Just his $.02.

Hey, I'm all about saving a buck, and these Rheems are generally cheaper than the A.O. Smith, even without the clearance price. But, I'd rather not get a call in the middle of the night from my tenants to replace a broken water heater, so I'll take the supposed better one. Would do the same for my own home if we had to.

The lower price makes sense, since the product is discontinued.
A quick Internet search shows good reviews for the manufacturer, and this product line.
Thanks for posting!

Lowes used to sell Whirlpools which had really bad reputations. Not sure if the AO Smith stuff is *real* AO Smith or just rebranded Whirlpool junk.

Screw the big box stores anyway. Go to an actual plumbing supply house and buy there. Its usually close in price and those are the heaters that plumbers install, not the slimmed down stuff that makes money for HD and Lowes.

I would definitely agree if you are having a plumber install it for you. They would know through hard experience which heater is most reliable. I can also live without my water heater being connected to the Internet.

Do most people install their own water heaters?
