Every spyder has the same sensor. Only the software package changes. Spyders use organic filters. Organic filter will redshift after 2.5-3.5 years.

If the "display device" is hooked up to a windows pc, it can be calibrated with any spyder. To calibrate a projector you just need to "show" the spyder the picture on a tripod. The spider 4's had this feature, the spyder 5's still had the tripod mount and it was an undocumented feature. The trick still works with the latest spyders.

I know noone wants to hear "just pay double" but the X-rite i1Display (used to be called color monki) is worlds better and wont degrade over time.

So if you just want to true up an ips display (and maybe charge your freinds 10 bucks to true up their displays) get the $100 spyder. If you depend on color for a paycheck/side hustle, or want to use it for more than 2 years, get the x-rite.

Damn this is a good deal. I'm a sculptor and used it to calibrate monitors for more accurate color work. Works great. Do turn off the automatic calibration reminder or it will interrupt any work that is full screen - including online video games.

I have the Spyder5 Pro; how does this one stack up against it? Is it worth the jump?

SpyderX products were crapped on last week with the deal on the SpyderX Elite. This one has plenty up thumbs up and some praise. Any incite?

I'm looking for something that will also calibrate a projector. The elite does, but the pro does not.

Lots of 1-star reviews on Amazon but it's impossible to tell if it's from competitors or genuine.

I have a Spyder 4 Express and I'm on Windows. Is it worth updating? From what you said, it seems Spyder 4 or this deal use the same sensor and no need to upgrade?

The newest spyder 4 is 5 years old at this point. The newest spyder 5 is 2 years old.

Again for truing up an ips display, they can still do it better than a human with color index gifs and color gels, even if they are past their expiration date.

The spyderX gets you MUCH faster calibration speed. You can plop down in a new room with new lighting (the pro uses the back eye ball for room calibration) and be up in running in 30 seconds. But its not going be a better calibration vs a spyder 4/5.

However if you are calibrating an OLED or MVA or old plasma, or any other display type other than IPS, the spyders are going to suck when it comes to grey scale and shadow detail. They will redshift those displays and crush the blacks since they can not "see" black levels below that of a standard ips display. And those little blobs of jelly in your skull will auto adapt to the redshift and you wont be able to tell unless you have a correctly calibrated display right next to it.

Does this work if you're colorblind? Asking for a friend.
