Rule of thumb on honing rods is 1 inch for every inch of blade length. So this will be good for a knife with a 9 inch blade. OAL is about 14".

The shorter lengths are ok. But if your only going to have one, you get the longer one. Been using mine for the last 20+ year. Good ones are better than the uber cheap ones. However I have never tried a combo surface. Just the micro groove.

If anything get a ceramic rod like the idahone, but blegh to steel rods.

Shun knifes can NOT be horned, due to single edge blade, and nearly impossible to sharpen to with a whetstone, unless one is real meticulous and knows the technique. Why do Shun make and sell horning tool is a mystery to when they tell customer to not to sharpen their knives, but send to them for professional sharpening.
