This is a mass gainer, not a protein powder. The "extra crap" is additional calories. Mass gainer has a specific purpose. Telling people to just get protein powder and food instead is just as ridiculous as telling people to just eat a steak instead of using protein powder.
However, as a 2-federation natural bodybuilding pro and competitive weight lifter, I can attest that after years of drinking mass gainers (yuck, I have PTSD from the Optimum one I first tried in my teens) eating whole foods is much more beneficial to weight/muscle gain as well as performance vs. manufactured quick carbs. However, it's also important to point out that i'm very willing to sit down and cook my food to achieve my goals; as well as have a career that allows me the time to do it.
On the other hand, just purely from an ingredient and frugality standpoint, if someone wants a super easy way to bulk up - head over to MyProtein to grab an 11lb bag of whey concentrate and an equally large bag of powdered oats. literally the same thing for much cheaper and the (loosely) knowing that you have better ingredients in your shake.
