I bought an ADATA SSD for my laptop and due to ADATA not releasing a drive-specific driver I can't install windows feature packs. The performance has been great and the value was good, except without support I'm left unable to upgrade my OS.

Even if it doesn't have DRAM this sounds like a good deal for 2 TB NVMe with a heatsink. Not going to break any speed records but way faster than a SATA SSD.

That's...odd. Are you sure the system isn't identifying the drive as a Windows To Go drive? I had a workstation where that bit got flipped and it couldn't upgrade at all. A single change to the registry bit fixed it (telling the OS is wasn't W2G).

I've actually never seen an SATA (or PCIe, for that matter) drive with a "driver" except for the add-on bull**** that gets bundled with Intel Optane cached drives. The only place I'm used to them is for SAS and RAID interfaces that require special drivers to load before boot.

OTOH, not getting Windows upgrades is often more of a feature than a bug, seeing as you can't turn them off anymore, and not all of them are useful.

Used to be a big fan of Adata and their newer units were as reliable as any despite the (often undeserved) bad rap they got. But with their shenanigans with replacing controllers and chips transparently with different performance, I don't trust the company any more. They have shot themselves in the foot and just entice with lower prices.

Between PNY, Crucial, WD, SK Hynix and Samsung all price/performance ratios should be covered to buy anything else.

At $175 vs $185 for the Team Group 2TB SLC and vs $210 for the Crucial 2TB (with DRAM i think) on Amazon, that's only 94.6% of the price of the Team Group and 83% of the price of the Crucial. All the other faster models/brands went up even higher in price than that.

I'll take one at that price. You'll never notice the speed difference anyway I'd imagine for your average user with a gaming PC.

This sounds like something weird in your BIOS. These and pretty much every other SSD runs on windows natively without any specific drivers. Check to make sure it's running in AHCI and not IDE mode in the BIOS (Not even sure NVMe can run on IDE mode, it always defaults to AHCI for me). beyond that, it's likely something your laptop manufacturer did.

Maybe it is okay, but this is the first unit that I saw come with slower than 2GB/s read/write speed, even at 2 TB size.

I believe this uses QLC NAND.

I guess you've never encountered an Intel 660p (or variants). LMAO
