United Airlines with code-sharing partners Austrian Airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa and Expedia have round trip airfares travelling from multiple West Coast cities (Los Angeles Seattle San Francisco San Diego Portland Salt Lake City Phoenix Sacramento ) to Vienna Austria (VIE) in the low $500's. Flights make 1 stop and are basic economy fares, a restricted-type fare that includes one personal item and one carry-on bag for free. There is no seat selection or changes. There's an option to move to main cabin for more services before final checkout.

After some playing around on dates, it looks like there's a limited 4 seats available at this price per flight.

Travel Availability:
Mid-September thru December 11; January 5 thru February 21, 2022

Book directly with the airline. One of the things we have all learned is how hard is to deal with 3rd book parties. Specially Expedia.

I've seen this mentioned more lately but is this a recent thing? I've flown tons and rarely have I ever used the airline site directly and never had an issue. Maybe I just got lucky (?).

Expedia etc work fine when there are no problems.

The above applies more to issues with cancelled flights, full refunds vs vouchers etc, which skyrocketed during Covid.

It took me 9 months and endless phone calls to get a refund for tickets I bought on Expedia because their customer services couldn't follow the airline's instructions and the airline wouldn't assist me directly because the tickets were bought through an agent. I had to file a complaint with the DOT and after they got involved, they got their shit together.
