This is one of the best sounding headphone amp on the market. It has a lot of power and has been feeding my headphones since it came out. Despite its power, it runs very cool.
isnt a heresy/atom/LS/magni ~ $100 and can drive 99% of the HP out there? Aside from being balanced, is there anything else that brings to the table? Not sure i can justify spending over 2x more even if you have a pair of balanced HP but i guess if you own a $600 pair of HP , then maybe 250 for an amp is not outlandish.

despite what you may think amps have different quality levels as do DACs, the 789 is so revered because its exceptionally clean and detailed for the price, however if you aren't ever going to use balanced buy the "linear one" instead which is the same thing but with half the DAC and amp modules since you don't need 2 for unbalanced.... the linear one will measure and sound better than the magni 3... but the quality of your amp won't matter much unless you have a badass DAC feeding it analog

You need a decent dac, and thats sort of implied if you are shopping for something like this. the issue here is that an atom/schiit/monoprice stack is as much as this or less so up to you if you think this is worth it. Thing that people get hung up on is the balanced feature like thats supposed to be a huge step up in hifi sound and the reality is that its not. But then again if you have some high end gear then spending 250 on an amp is probably not a concern. for newcomers though i would stay away
I know this is a good amp. My biggest reason for sticking with my Schiit stack is I hate that there is not a matching DAC for the Drop amps since the Airist has been discontinued. Drop really needs an DAC in the same form factor. Also, for some reason most Schiit stuff has next to no depreciation. you can sell an older Magni for like $20 less than you paid for it.
