Zero Water uses DI resin (along with a bit of carbon) to remove solids from water.

This will make your TDS (total dissolved solids, which is measured using electrical conductivity) go down -- ionized particles are (by definition) conductive.

This is different from the purification methods commonly used which are distillation (boiling and condensing), reverse-osmosis (membrane filtration), and carbon filtering (adsorption).

It works by using postitively and negatively charged plastic beads (resin) to attract and cling to oppositely charged particles in the water. Imagine water with tiny iron shavings in it, and pouring that water through a bed of magnets. The water coming out will be free of (most) iron shavings.

However, since it only works with conductive particles, it only filters out certain things. For instance oils, soaps, and organisms (bacteria, viruses) will not be affected by this and will mostly get through the filter unless trapped by the small amount of activated carbon or caught in the filter mesh.

Some things to consider:

1. Removing all dissolved minerals is not natural. Water has minerals in it which are necessary to survive and be healthy, and drinking completely de-ionized water will actively remove minerals from your body as it is processed. That said, unless you are not eating it is highly unlikely this will harm you

2. Removing all dissolved minerals makes water taste funny to some people. Highly purified water is often 'remineralized' after processing so that it doesn't taste synthetic

3. Removing the anti-microbials from treated water can allow it to go rancid

4. TDS meters are often included with Zero water pitchers and people encouraged to use them to test the quality before and after filtration. TDS meters rely on electrical conductivity to detect particles and as using them as the definitive measure of drinking water quality is incredibly deceptive

5. DI filters are mostly used after pre-filtering, since using them to remove everything from the water is wasteful since filtration materials like actived carbon are orders of magnitude cheaper

6. Reverse osmosis filtration systems are much more cost effective in the long run, especially if you have hard water. Hard water will deplete the zero water filters very quickly and they are expensive.
Crazy deal 🔥🔥🔥🔥, I usually get them for about 10 bucks a filter

This one always has such mixed reviews. Some like the taste, some hate it. Some are pro 0 TDS, some advocate against. Some complain about filter mechanism leading to bacterial smell of sorts, some are ok with it.
I just wish I could get good old PUR instead of having to considering to switch between this or brita or clearly etc etc. Where is PUR????????/

I looked into Zero Water but a good number of reviews mentioned a strong fish/acidic smell and taste after a month or so. I ended up buying Epic Water pitcher but those refills are much more $$ and I'd prefer something cheaper as long as it works.

Have any of you had this problem with the pitcher??

I have used zero filters for about 8 years now, depending on how much water filtered but my last about 2.5 months. Once it starts to get the smell, is time to get a new filter to replace it.

Total bs.

This is the best tasting water imho.

The pitchers can crack if you stuff your fridge.

Also there is no Faucet attachment

Zero water is giving best pure water. I am not experiencing any issues like no taste, fish smell etc... This is pure nice and beautiful water. My filter lasted 6 months in Bay Area. East Bay TDS is around 30 and Zero water makes it 0. I have serious medical condition and Zero water is working rock solid and giving required protection. Filters are very expensive and this is very good deal to stock filters. 👍
