I've lived in the Northeast my entire life and think these are useless. I can't imagine these things provide very much insulation at all. Just turn the water off to your outside spigots and don't worry about these.

Spoke with my plumber when I first moved in. Had a pipe burst on previous owner, he said if you leave the hose attached the water wont drain. Something like this necessary in the North East or just overkill? For the few bucks ill definitely spend it for peace of mind, just not sure its helpful...

If it's an older home with older spigots/sillcocks then this will definitely help. Most newer homes come with freeze/frost proof spigots/sillcocks.

Sound advice, but you may want to suggest a year (ie 2005+ newer homes).

I agree with you. They seem like they might work, but also might be a waste of money.

Driving wind in cold weather is a contributing factor to frozen pipes. I believe these do a good job deflecting that factor. Do whatever you can to shutoff from the inside (and install a inside shutoff if you don't have one), but for $1 it's good extra protection.

I don't need it, but if Jeff matches, I'd probably buy it. I have the frost proof ones, but adding this cant' hurt, right?

May not be effective on newer homes but at least it'll provide some coverage from physical damage or tempering.

We rarely freeze in the south so they put the <$10 spigot versus the >$20 freezeproof sigots.

When I build my house I will spend the extra on the freezeproof although it is rarely needed.

A few plumbers I spoke with here in SW OH said hoses shouldn't be connected during winter for freezing reasons.
