People always ask "doesn't the app do the same stuff?" but fail to realize that this is supposed to serve a different purpose. If you shoot in dry enviros with a single cam, then yes, stick to your app. If you are say... swimming or paddling... with up to 5 cameras attached at different angles and you want to start/stop them all together without risking your phone to the deep, dark abyss that is the ocean floor, you will probably want this remote. Same goes for skydiving... I suppose you could wrist mount your phone to start everything, but would you want to risk it vs just having this strapped to your wrist? It's important to understand WHY you need certain accessories.
I picked up the newer "The Remote" at Target on clearance for the same price a few weeks ago, but wouldn't connect to my older GoPro Fusion. Not sure why they had the new model on clearance. My guess is the model number is similar to the "Smart Remote".
Anyway, worth a shot finding the newer remote on clearance, too!

I can see the latency issue.
