8th gen. Came out in 2018. Seems a bit old.

Though these are expensive and the specs are great.

I would focus on the number of cores, 4, instead of the age. About the only ding at this price is typical for all Surface products: no RAM upgrade path. However, with 4 solid-performing cores and 8GB of RAM, along with a nice screen and design, you're doing OK for the money since this will likely have a good long life for usability. For most productivity applications 8GB isn't likely to become the new 4GB for Windows anytime soon.

At the same time, do consider that you are paying a premium for the screen/design as refurb 8 core systems (which are typically in bulkier, more generic 15.6" screen platforms) start at exactly this price. You can also find decent 4-core systems with similar, but also upgradeable, components at lower prices in (again) more generic platforms.

Good luck!

The last three gens have had a lot of improvement.

But I agree this is enough processing power and if you need more you most likely need more than 8GB DDR as well.

For reference, when the Surface Laptop Go series launched with nice i5, 4 core CPUs and 8GB configurations could be had around the $600 mark via Micro Center discounts those were a go-to recommendation for me in the "laptops you should get your parents" range. Microsoft and Intel have done nice work together on hardware. The only ding as of late has been some of Intel's confusing Pentium/Celeron branding of low-power Atom-core based CPUs and, even more recently, some of the dual-core i3 configurations that really don't represent the i-series well.

Good luck!
