Costco's version of the i3 with some extras (virtual wall and extra filter) seems like this is as low as it gets. Ordered one, but curious if anyone has any experience in this versus their i8 which is 700
I picked up one of these at my local Costco last week. It is a huge upgrade from my original Roomba Discovery (4130).
The iRobot Home app is really needed to control this. That is the easiest way to set features like deep cleaning, return to home on bin full, sounds, notifications etc. It will map rooms and save them in the history, but you can't set ignore zones or otherwise use the maps for anything useful. The dust bin is a tad larger than a 12 oz can. If you set it to pause cleaning on bin full, it will return to the home base and alert you by the phone app that the bin needs to be emptied. Once you empty the bin it will resume cleaning where it left off. The app will also notify you when it is finished.
The Roomba I4 only uses 2.4GHz WiFi and will not work on a 5 GHz network. You need to put your phone on the 2.4GHz network to initially setup the I4. Once you setup the I4, you can switch back to 5GHz on your phone. The dust bin that comes with it does not have the valve to allow self emptying. This makes the bin a tiny bit larger than the I3+. Of course the self emptying ones don't need any help when the bin gets full.
I like the 2 rubber brushes versus the rotating rubber & bristle brush roller of the old Roomba Discovery. The new I4 doesn't need the rubber brushes cleaned very often. (The old Discovery model needed those cleaned after almost every cleaning run.)
This I4 model has decent suction like a vacuum should. The old Discovery model's suction wasn't much better than a powered sweeper.
I was torn between this model and the I7+ at $550. I chose the I4 because of price. It is similar in actual vacuuming performance to the I7+. The I4 lacks the self emptying feature of the I7+ home base and the intelligent zone settings in the mapping (living room, kitchen, pet bowls, etc.) of the I7+.
The smaller home base does make moving the I4 from floor to floor of my multi-level house much easier. (Nevermind this comment, user error: The I series Roomba models seem to get confused if they don't start from their home base/charger station.)
