I bought the 5 camera deal two months ago and I would not recommend to a new customer. You need to subscribe to their monthly service to get most of the functions. If you have it from before maybe it's worth getting. The recordings have issues and quality is not that good.
Comes with sync module 2 which can store the videos locally to a USB if you don't want to use their subscriptions. All the newer cameras is either subscription or local storage which kind of suck, when the previous gens XT2 and older all get free cloud storage. This is definitely one of those worthy fuxk Bezos moment.
I think the best part about these camera is how affordable they are generally, and that's about it. It's pretty hard to find 3 camera kits for around a hundred bucks that can do fine without subscription and does local storage. If you just want fairly basic motion sensor camera and doesn't need a ton of active surveillance for long periods of time, these are pretty alright.
Also the camera claims that you can only use lithium batteries on these, but Eneloop actually do great on them and can last a couple months depending on how much traffic the camera gets. It's not like you actually get 2 years from lithium batteries anyway.
I bought this last time it was posted from Costco. It's ok for what it is, to get the most out of these, you would want a subscription. I have one of them hooked to a solar panel with 1 rechargeable battery inside the panel and the other two are being powered by 25ft USB cables.

Why do you need a subscription? This comes with the Sync Module 2 which stores everything locally.
Is there something I'm missing like other functions that require subscriptions?

nope
also really not sure what everyone's gripe is. Some higher end cameras can provide features like 4k and person detection, but they are at least twice the price.

In order to view the recorded videos from the Sync Module 2 local storage, I heard that you have to move the video files from the local storage usb to computer to view the videos. Can't view the videos from your phone directly. Is that true?

I'm in the market for a total solution, outdoor cameras and spotlights, indoor cameras, etc. Can anyone recommend a system to get started in? I've heard Ring is overpriced.
