#1 note taking app almost never go on sale. Now 50% because their main competitor (Notability) made a mistake going to subscription only, then retracted that decision for existing users.

Is it just me, or are subscriptions the worst thing to happen to the App Store?

I used to buy apps all the time, but now I try to avoid them because every app, no matter how insignificant, now requires a monthly fee.
I believe the "free" year was their "generous" offer to existing paid customers with the introduction of the subscription model. Now that they've gotten in trouble, they're supposedly extending it.

What they'll probably do is just abandon the base Notability app everyone paid for and introduce a "brand new", "upgraded" subscription version of Notability (Notability Pro, Notability 12, etc.) that will technically be a new app.
That feeling when you come into a thread thinking you'll be buying a nice app at 50% off, only to discover you already purchased its competitor a decade ago, and you now have free lifetime access. mmm-mmmm good. Thanks, OP.

Existing users get to continue using Notability for free for one year, then it is an annual subscription for $11.99. How did Notability reverse its decision for existing users?

Notability decided to give lifetime access to people who have already paid for the app:

I've never used Notability but I did pay full price for Good Notes 5 and have enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing, OP.

That's good to know. In app, I see a "complementary" subscription until November 1, 2022. I guess that means I would get all updates until then, but no future updates after 2022.

Me too. I had no idea about the Notability announcement but I'm glad they rectified the situation.

Notability will release another app the will be subscription only and will quit updating the existing one. That's how most companies doing now.

Yep that's exactly how they going to do. The need to show constant incoming revenue from their product for the investors, that's gonna happen only with subscription business model.
