Didn't see this posted, price looks worthwhile for NAS shoppers, and CCC suggests that this price is ~$50 cheaper than Amazon ever had it.

Not bad if you are just looking for storage, or an entry point into the Synology ecosystem. Please be careful when purchasing a NAS with the intent of running your Plex server on it, especially if you intend to transcode.

This one on woot is the Realtek processor, so not one you want for Plex.

If my goal is to watch 4k media in my house over hardwired ethernet to Nvidia Shield & Fire sticks via Plex/Emby, would I still need transcoding?

Depends on the media and the players. If you have x256/HEVC media then it may have to transcode if the fire sticks don't support it (or you turn subtitles on), otherwise it'll most likely direct play

https://support.plex.tv/articles/...-overview/

that link is a good breakdown of the difference between direct play/stream and transcoding

The fire stick is my concern here. My moms fire stick always wanted to transcode.

I would not use this device for Plex or Emby.

If you buy this, be prepared to replace the janky stock fans. Those things are super loud compared to a decent aftermarket fan even if they don't break.

I have the 2 disk version, it's been super reliable other than that. Definitely not good for transcoding like others have said though.

If on the client side you have something powerful like AppleTV 4K, does it matter how lame the server side is? Won't it transcode or do what it needs on the AppleTV end?

If you have the 2016 Shield or the 2019 Shield Pro (i.e. not the 2019 Shield tube), you can use the Shield as your actual Plex server, and the Synology simply as network-attached media storage. This is what I do, because even higher end Synology stations tend to be slow for a Plex server compared to Shield. This allowed me to just opt for a slower and cheaper Synology box. It's still plenty fast for 24/7 surveillance recording and hosting various other servers... just not media transcoding.

This NAS is storage for my servers. 0 complaints so far on reliability. Bought it in 2019. Mostly have all my storage in one iSCSi lun with various small shares for other things. I think my one complaint is that it doesn't have the Synology Active Backup for Business features, which allows for the seamless backup of VMs and servers. (Have to upgrade to a newer model for that). I don't use it fort Plex or transcoding or anything, might be a bit underpowered for that. If you're the only user of it or just need a box for reliable storage, it'd be fine though.

Will there be any noticeable performance degradation if multiple people are using the shield device at the same time to stream content?

Depends if you transcode or not. If you directplay it won't matter. Alternatively get a different pc that is quicksync compatible. You can buy a cheap one doesn't really matter, that's the best option imo.
