Looks like the best deal by far on these models, I've been eyeing the 14 inch at Costco bc I love their return policy and warranty but could be worth it throwing in Apple Care

Not sure if that's worth the extra $400.. I'm a developer who has VMs/docker/webpack builds/databases and open a crap of chrome tabs and I never had a problem with 16gb of ram. M1 memory management is insane, and if you look at performance benchmarks online for heavy tasks it's not really that restrictive.

If you plan to keep the laptop for like 3+ years then I understand wanting more just in case. It does hurt SSD endurance as it uses nvme as swap. I'd rather use that money to upgrade storage space. It also depends on how much you trust apple's nvme endurance rating.

Edit: I just wanted to clarify that I'm saying using 16gb of ram is fine, but it's also okay to get more if you know you'll be targeting 16+ gb of ram usage for write/read heavy swap like VMs/have the money for it. For most people, 16gb is fine and isn't as restrictive as most think.

Yeah, since Apple doesn't verify, this is the better route. Plus if you have Discover or Chase cards with 5% back in some stores, you can buy Apple GC's at a slight discount and add them to your Apple account balance to make the MacBook purchase and double dip.

I got the 14" 8c/16gb/1tb for 2049 after tax doing the above.

What stores did you buy the gift cards at a discount 👀? Also is the 5% automatic?

Apple's EDU discount is better FYI for those who are students (don't lie please).

For future-proofing, when you're already getting such a capable laptop, I think 32GB is actually a really good idea. First off, who isn't going to keep these for at least 3 years? Macs last and have great long term resale value. It doesn't make sense to only keep it for less than 3 years. Also, these machines have very fast CPUs and will be high performance machines for a long time with 0 ability to upgrade memory at a future date. IMO, why WOULDN'T you get 32GB of RAM with a machine that is otherwise so powerful.

I'm looking at 32 or bust. It's good to know that 16 is working for you. I do plan to use it for 5 years. I know that's a long time for tech. But you're a developer. You know just how capable old technology still is.

So, you cannot upgrade it from 16 to 32 in this machine?
