I can barely stand buying from Amazon anymore. The reviews for essentially every product are all over the place. "Worst product in the universe!" followed by, "This is my favorite product I've ever had!" Or "The new [insert-feature-here] is the best thing ever," followed by, "The new feature is the worst thing ever." It's impossible to believe the reviews anymore. Just makes me not want to buy. Same thing applies with this product. Sigh.

Any product will almost always have negative reviews. Some people receive a dud which can happen on mass produced items or there are people who can't be bothered to learn how to use an item properly. If the majority of reviews are negative then it's probably safe to say it's junk. Many variants and usually you just have to try it our for yourself. The bigger problem are the fake/bought reviews on Amazon. Also, which is ridiculous and shouldn't be allowed, some sellers switch out products and utilize the positive reviews of the previous one even if it's completely different. That's why under reviewers you should pay attention to what color or what item it says under the date of the review.

I get that and started using review meta, worst case I send it back for a refund. I buy enough stuff from them I'm not worried about getting banned.

I certainly understand the "some people receive a dud" kind of situation. That's not the common scenario I find while browsing Amazon product reviews. For instance, this OXO product. I see it is rated a full 5-stars, and I think, "Wow, this product must be incredible!" Then I click on the reviews, and what do I see? The first five reviews are that the product(s) are a disaster. They explode on people. They break easily. The lid sucks. Hundreds and hundreds of "helpful" votes on each one describing that. So how do you easily reconcile that? A full 5-star rating, but the most helpful reviews describe a 1-star product. It takes so much time just trying to analyze the reviews of every product; it's brain overload that I've been realizing makes me just want to throw up my hands and not buy at all.

I have been using ReviewMeta recently. It's at least a step in the right direction. But Amazon needs to do something about this on their end, and I have no idea if they even know of this situation. I contacted support awhile back to submit this feedback, but who knows where that ends up.

+1

When you have to do an hour of research before buying a pie plate it's easier to skip the pie plate.

Go to any thrift store and there will be a mountain of pie plates selling for $0.10 or $0.25 each!

Lately I've found that checking the "most recent reviews " gives me a much more accurate reading of the truth about the product than the "top reviews" which are years old and loaded with fake reviews.

You'll note on this product that the recent reviews tend to be not favorable. I'll skip this item.

Same here. As others have noted, some of the older reviews are often not even for the same product or tend to be the shill/fake/paid for variety. I think it is common for sellers to flood the gates early with fake positive reviews to boost sales, then the 'real' consumer reviews tend to overtake them.

I agree with you in general regarding Amazon but OXO products are generally very high quality.

Every time I wrote a positive comment on Amazon it was well received. First time I had a negative review it was rejected by Amazon and since then I stopped ordering from Amazon unless it is an exceptional deal for an industry standard product like Duracell AAA 24 pack for $6, otherwise I am checking Walmart, Target and everywhere else.
