It allows a modern Apple device (with no 3.5mm jack) to be used with corded headphones (or other devices which have a 3.5mm input). Apple sells a very rudimentary adapter which allows users to connect any old 3.5mm headphones to an iDevice. The apple adapter is very low quality and I have seen two break with light use over a period of weeks. This product is a significant step up in quality, and is intended for higher end headphones which have removable cables. Keep in mind, this cable plugs IN to your headphones, not vice versa.
The DAC in the Apple adapter is actually high quality, the problem is the cable construction.
Anker makes an adapter
And the DAC in it is crap
Yes, the DAC is not the issue. It is the tiny, terrible cable.

What do you do with two male plugs.... Unless I'm missing something really obvious

I think this is for high end headphones that have a female plug (removable 3.5mm cable). Or you can buy a M to F adapter.

The headphones have the 3.5mm female plug. This cable has the lightning port to plug into an iPhone, and the 3.5mm male plug at the other end to plug into the headphones
