While they FEEL cheap, they're great tools if you're not using them professionally. All of my electric garden tools are B&D and I have more expensive things for the shop.

I've never had one crap out on me and they work really well for the price. They just look and feel like a toy.
Actually, quite the opposite in my experience. Might not have available plugs in or near tight spaces and cords themselves get in the way. Cordless is much more convenient in tight spaces, and modern cordless tools work just fine for providing enough power to handle jobs quickly.
If you are in the Black+Decker battery system with your other tools, it is worth to consider it. But only a 1.5Ah battery? That's not a lot of sawing until you have to recharge it.

Yep. You'd really want a 4.0Ah battery. And those tend to be about the cost of this whole unit.

That being said, I'm not a fan of B&D. Their items just feel cheap.

For light duty it works great. I used one for a few years and recently upgraded to Ridgid. Much more power, but more expensive.

I would personally not bother with a cordless reciprocating saw. That's a tool you want an much power as possible for since your often in awkward or cramped places and don't want to be sawing for long periods.

Actually, quite the opposite in my experience. Might not have available plugs in or near tight spaces and cords themselves get in the way. Cordless is much more convenient in tight spaces, and modern cordless tools work just fine for providing enough power to handle jobs quickly.

Will cordless ones be strong enough on tree roots with a bit of dirt?

I own one of these and can say I wouldn't buy another even at this price. Mine cut about 10 roots before it needed recharging.

It doesn't sound like you need another one. It sounds like you need a 4.0Ah battery.
Then, maybe you'll get 25 roots, lol.

Then you can also charge the included 1.5Ah battery for 15min, while using the entire 4Ah's juice...

I guess you have a point. I have yet to have a B&D item break down. Then again, I end up just grabbing a ryobi or ridgid instead. Which dramatically decreases any possible wear on the B&D

(this is slickdeals. We get ryobi and ridgid for less than B&D prices, if willing to wait for the killer deals and/or used.

This is exactly what I did. But by the time you invest that much you might as well buy something quality like a DeWalt for slightly more.
