Well that muddies the waters. This vs the Synology DS920+ with the same processor and RAM, but Gigabit ethernet ports instead of 2.5G at the same price. I guess it mainly comes down to preference of QNAP vs Synology software.

I was worried about that going with QNAP 6 months ago, but took the plunge anyways. So far I've been impressed. Plenty of options, advanced to novice features. TONS of youtube videos to help out and a good base of users commenting on forums to help drive you to solutions when doing something weird or unusual.

Is it qnap or synology that has the bigger security concerns?

I think Synology is better in terms of functionality.

With QNAP, You can install a 10gbe NIC and SSD module. With synology 920-+ you can't

If you have cameras, synology charges for recording per camera license and qnap gives like 6-8 camera licenses free, if I am not mistaken.

That said I have synology and it runs like a champ. However, I am in need for another NAS and I might pick this one up.

There was a huge QNAP security flaw for a little while a year or two ago that usually devolved every QNAP thread. Is this still an issue or no?

Actually with QNAP, you got 8(QVR Pro)+4(Surveillance Station) camera license. You can buy The cost of license for 10 cameras for Synology would be more than the QNAP NAS.

I've actually owned both over the years. Synology originally pi**ed me off with bad external power supplies that took down 2 different NAS units multiple times. That was incredibly painful to recover each time and their support was ridiculously slow (2 weeks to get a replacement supply) even though they were under warranty. So, I switched to QNAP and have been mostly happy with it, but my TS-470Pro is getting long in the tooth and the QTS version is limited to an old version (although they're still doing firmware updates). With the security issues from earlier this year, I've uninstalled most apps and closed any ports facing the outside world, but the old QTS version coupled with drives that are over 5 years old means it's already on borrowed time so it's time to move on.

As far as software, I've found them both pretty easy to use with apps available for most anything I'd want to do. The ethernet ports and security camera licenses are non-issues for me and specs do say it has 2x SSD slots. Net result, I'm going to give Synology a try again. Hopefully they don't make me regret it.

Score: Worth the 2-drive expansion. I compared meticulously the exact specs - the only difference is the extra 2 slots, RAID 50/60, "RAID 10+ hot spare," extra fan. I scored the 6-bay for expandability, etc..Thanks.

I missed this deal. But I want one of these for data storage and backup. I am a raid newbie, what are some configurations so that if a drive is lost, the data is not???
