from the national fire protection association: Ionization smoke alarms are generally more responsive to flaming fires. Photoelectric smoke alarms are generally more responsive to fires that begin with a long period of smoldering. For best protection, it is recommended both (ionization and photoelectric) technologies be used in homes. In addition to individual ionization and photoelectric alarms, combination alarms that include both technologies in a single device are available.

I'm pretty sure the professional consensus is to have both kinds around the house because they do a better job detecting different types of fires. Ionization has a reputation for being more of a nuisance when close to the kitchen because of false alarms from steam or when you burn your food in the kitchen.

As mentioned in the posts following this, there are two types for two types of fire detection. Ideally, both are best together but nothing is wrong with these.
