$178 is basically the regular price at this point though. They aren't going to sell many at $229 so they will do $229 with a free tool or drop the price to $179 or lower for kit only. Hubertpun was referring to when they did both at the same time: a store had the kit for $179 but you could also get a free ratchet as well. For the entirety of last quarter you could get the kit for $179-$229 with a free tool, or you could return the free tool and get the kit for $98-$138.
You are going to get a mix of reactions because this is slick deals. Those looking for truly slick deals will hate on your post. Those looking for a little bit of savings will be thankful you posted.

Anyway, since I don't need this and certainly not right away, and it's more of a like to have than need to have item, I can wait a bit. It's also been out for several years so I assume that they're eventually going to come out with a superior replacement, especially with DeWalt just coming out with a comparable line of products that at least on paper are as good if not better. I'm guessing that when they do come out with it, these will be heavily discounted, and that it'll probably be by next summer, or sooner. I can wait, as I won't be doing much more on my car before spring. Too damn cold here for that.

It's actually this deal, but with the impact wrench as the additional item instead of no additional items. If they offered such a deal for $80 less, which is how much cheaper the deal you're advising me to wait for would be over this, or $270, I'd snag it sight unseen.

And this is precisely what I'm looking for and willing to wait till spring if need be to get, with the 3/8" impact wrench as the "extra gift":

This is assuming that it was really $229 with the wrench. But even at $279 it would be a deal. It's currently $349, in fact I posted a deal on it recently, and then one on this deal, not realizing that they were part of the same deal, and not as good a deal as one can get if one is willing to wait a while, which I am. I still think that $349 is a decent value considering what you're getting, and if you need these tools right now, it's stupid to wait, but obviously $229 is a far better deal, so I'll wait.
So if you can't steal from HD it is not a good deal, got it.
Sure, if it was a local mom and pop hardware store and they were nice people, it would be wrong and I'd even bring it to their attention and to hell with local cheapskates who were willing to take them. But this is HD, a multi-billion dollar corporation that can easily absorb the costs and will still be making a small profit on what you end up keeping, and chances are that you'll buy other things while you're their, making this a loss leader even though they're probably losing nothing other than additional profit.
If you can come up with a solid and compelling argument for why I'm wrong, I'm all ears.
