Just a warning if you are sensitive to PWM dimming / flicker related eye strain. The OLED panel on the 14p has bad PWM flicker at around 50% or lower brightness. I bought the 5900HX version of this laptop a couple of months ago when it first launched, but had to return it because I experienced eye strain. I even posted the deal on SD. This panel has PWM all the way to max brightness, but was really noticeable at around 50% brightness or below.

You may not notice PWM right away as you will be too busy enjoying that drop dead gorgeous display, but I started experiencing eye strain after using it for a few days. Did some research and found out about OLED PWM flicker. I experienced eye strain even though I use phones with OLED panels, which was surprising and disappointing.

Can't believe $1000 devices can still have PWM flicker in 2021.

Take a look at this slow motion video of my 14p (took with my Note 10+). This was at a relatively high brightness. It's a lot worse at lower brightness levels. The screen behind is my 32" curved VA display with no PWM.

Can the OP or someone else kindly enlighten me what is exactly meant by Slickdeals Rewards (Cashback)? Like if it's stated 12% then I'll get a further discount ON TOP of the stacked coupons on my order?

Almost all laptop OLED displays use PWM control at certain brightness, including the one you see in lot higher priced laptops like Dell XPS OLED or Gigabyte Aero 15. That is the nature of OLED Panel and comparing it with a completely different Panel technology like VA or IPS and saying those don't have PWM does not really make much sense.

The main issue with this model is that the PWM starts below 50% brightness and the frequency is a bit low which can cause headache to people sensitive to it.

It like a Cashback site and you need to install the SD browser plugin for that. Follow the steps mentioned in the post. I did not create that part, it gets automatically added when the deal site is having SD Cashback.

There is PWM even at 100% brightness. The panel supports more than 400nits, and they use PWM to get it to 400nits. I viewed it in slow motion mode on my Note 10+ at 100% brightness and could still see flicker. It is not as bad at lower brightness levels, but the PWM doesn't end at 50%. That is wrong information I have seen on some sites. I owned this laptop, so have first hand information. This is most likely a 500nit peak brightness display (for HDR500 support), and even at 400nit max brightness for regular use, they use PWM.

I got one two, but had to return it because the screen had lines in it… so new they had none to replace it with. 🤦 ♂️

Ended up with the 14p Gen 2 with 2.2k IPS instead and feel better. The OLED was gorgeous, but man I was scared of burn in. People say not to worry, but I didn't want to chance it especially with all the static stuff in windows, office and games. Prob shouldn't have to worry anymore, but I'm happy.

Got the 5800H now…Miss having the 5900… for reasons 😅

Are you saying just because you're seeing flickering at higher brightness over 50% meaning it is using PWM? Are you sure if that is true? For OLED display, the PWM FLICKERING control is different than that in a backlit display. Samsung uses a combination of analogue control and PWM in their OLED Panels, including in their phones and tablets. But you won't see that in higher brightness due to the PWM frequency being very higher. And regarding the 500 nits peak brightness, OLED works completely different than a normal backlit panel and in normal usage, you will never reach that. That can only be triggered in a small portion of the display when you're actually viewing HDR content. I am using a 4K OLED Panel for over an year now and tested these. The flicker you see at higher brightness is not due to PWM but due to the nature of an OLED display's individual Pixel behavior.

Currently the only 2880x1800 14" 90Hz OLED Panel is from Samsung and the model is Samsung SDC4154. The main issue with this panel compared t 15.6" 4K Panels are the lower PWM frequency which is 300-360 Hz and gets triggered below 50% brightness. Asus VivoBook Pro 14/14x use the same Panel there are multiple reviews available for that. It is highly unlikely that all the review channels like NotebookCheck, UltraBookReview did make that measuring mistake.

The 960fps video of my 14p I shot was taken at 60 or 70% brightness. Looks a lot like PWM. Here is the video again: https://imgur.com/a/UopowfI

That definitely doesn't look like DC dimming like the monitor behind it. Whatever it was, it was very noticeable next to a non OLED display (desktop monitor and another laptop I have), and it was leading to eye fatigue over extended periods of use. I was so bummed about it too. It was such an incredible laptop in every way, but I just couldn't keep something that could cause eye strain if I stared at it for hours every day. Very very disappointing as I absolutely love OLED displays on phones.

Have you switched of AMD Varry Bright from Radeon Control Center? That flickering you have shown, I have seen in many laptops without PWM flickering, including IPS and it looks like that something is trying to adjust the display refresh rate, brightness and contrast dynamically. That's why I asked you about the AMD Varry Bright setting.

No, I didn't. Unfortunately, the laptop is long gone. I returned it on the last day of the 30 day return window about a month ago.

Keep in mind that the video is almost 1000fps slowed down to 60fps / 720p. It was definitely not flickering like that in real time.
