Noticed that the 2018 version of the ASL 2 (2 person 3-4 season backpacking tent) is on sale for $258.93 >Now $198.93 (usually $399.00) which is 35% off! Just in time for winter!

I was wondering what the difference between 2018 and the current version of this tent was, so I got on chat with REI support. They noted that the only difference between the two models is that the 2018 is treated with flame retardant whereas the current model is not. Other that that they are the same (confirmed that the tech specs are all but identical except some wording differences on the poles). Not sure how accurate that is, but was enough for me to pull the trigger on the 2018. Hope this helps get you out there in winter on the cheap!

So i used to think like this, and not sure if ur messing around or not but for those actually asking the question, the Ozark one would work fine for a few trips before it starts to break down.

When you go with REI you are getting quality, durability, weight difference and essentially the best bang for your buck. There are more expensive brands and cheaper brands too but i think REI hits the sweet spot, while still pricy its the best balance you can get. Also id look into it but this one stays warmer too.

With that being said my broke ass still has a cheap random tent 😂
Kindly suggest how I can take my car several miles up a mountain trail made for hiking.

Some of us aim for a bit more adventure than car camping, thanks.
I don't get what all the debate is about or why so many car campers are chiming in. This tent is for specific people; if it's not for you then it's not for you, but that doesn't mean it's not a good deal.

If you plan to camp at a campground near a road, you don't need this tent. There are much cheaper tents that will suit you perfectly.

If you only go ultralight, you don't need this tent. There are lighter tents out there, although oftentimes more expensive.

If you don't plan on camping in the winter/snow, you don't need this tent. There are cheaper, lighter tents for the other 3 seasons.

This tent is for backpackers who want a reasonably light double-walled tent with adjustable ventilation that will serve them from summer through winter and stay solid through moderately heavy winds near the treeline.

Plenty of people can make do with a Coleman tent or their car and that's perfectly fine. This isn't for you. But don't tell other people what they need, as if all of us camp in the same way. Hell if I'd bring an Ozark Trail tent on the PCT.

I have the new one on order (used the recent 20% coupon of course) so was very interested in this deal. For those interested in the flame retardant change this is the associated info from REI https://www.rei.com/blog/news/rei...retardants.

Why would you care about flame retardant in a tent?
I personally don't care. The whole point is that the 2018, which is on sale, doesn't seem to have any significant changes from the current gen, which isn't on sale. So the 2018 is seemingly the obvious buy between the two.

Yeah, I'm just goofing. Buy a good tent for life or a cheap tent for a couple of trips.

Sorry 6 people (and counting) missed the sarcasm.

Personally I'm just taking a Home Depot tarp and a sleeping bag. I call that "The Bearrito" especially when I store all my food in my pockets.

The Arete is a 3-4 season tent meaning it can handle snow and wind because of the extra center pole giving it rigidity. Also the Arete mesh can be zipped up meaning the elements such as sand cannot get inside the tent. It isn't a true 4 season tent but I really like taking this tent during soulder season (late fall/late winter). I have taken this in the Sierra during those times with strong winds and snow and this tent did well. It kept most of the sand and dirt out and also was much warmer than my 3 season tent. I do have the older version (2013) and my biggest complaint was poor ventilation and it seems like they fixed it with the large mesh on the ceiling of the tent.

The Half Dome 3 is a bigger tent and would do fine in fair weather camping. Of course the tent can be taken in the snow but I would not feel comfortable in a snow storm unless you plan to clear the roof with snow.

There are other 3-4 season tents with larger floor and more doors but those will cost considerably more. I think this is a great price for what this tent can do.
