Great deal on an otherwise excellent chromebook. It's nowhere near the $279 price 2 weeks ago but for $329 this is a great steal

BB had this on sale for $279 (I think) about 3 weeks ago. I snagged one and managed to load Fedora on it. I had to make a few tweaks to get the touchscreen, sound, fan (was stuck at mid level regardless of heat, which is a bit noisy) all working right, but now it's great. The keyboard feels good, and the screen is sharp (note it has 3:2 aspect ratio). Only complaint is the weight, at 3.2lbs it's a bit hefty for the size, but the tradeoff seems to be that the battery will last at least 10 hours. At $279 it was a great deal. At $329, it's still probably worth it if it's what you're looking for. Namely, and far as I know, it's the only option under $500 with a screen that is better than 1080p.

Using Gnome and it's running great. But only really used Firefox, Atom, and Terminal so far. VLC did fine the one time I tried. I've also tunneled apps over ssh, like Pidgin Firefox, and Chromium, and they all ran fine. It feels snappy...
The i3 has a decent single threaded benchmark score, and most UI code is single threaded, so unless you're doing a lot of things at once it should be just fine. And low power usage means it's hard to get the CPU to overheat, so it can make good use of the turbo speed.

Biased opinion. I got the 340 target hp i3 with windows as comparison. The hp i3 is 11th gen. The 713 is 10th.
I felt the difference. It was likely from the RAM difference but I was surprised that Edge was running smoothly when compared to Chrome on the 713. I returned the 713. The build quality and screen were just amazing. The HP screen is not too terrible.

Do you have a link to the details of getting Fedora up and running smoothly?
I jumped on the same deal, but it's sitting in the box as I consider returning it. I dragged my heals on the Spin 713 (i5 - 8GB - 128GB ssd) re-certified for $369 just after and now I'm kicking myself for it.

Well that particular 11th gen i3 has 4 cores and is basically a baby i5, while the 10th gen in the low spec-ed Spin 713 is a dual core. And yes of course, also the doubled RAM.

How is the build quality of that HP (target deal)? I thought the 14" for $270 was more attractive as I dislike num pads on laptops and off-center track pads, while being upgradable all over the place. I didn't get it however as I was already dragging my feet on the re-certified Spin 713 i5/8GB/128GB ssd model since it wouldn't be easily return no-questions.

The build quality on the HP leaves a lot to be desired. I was very worried when opened it up to upgrade the RAM (somehow managed it).
I also dislike the off-center trackpad (because of the numpad). I wish they had done away with it. Like 90% of the people I observe never use it. I mistype quite a bit because of this. But it's not like total hate for it. The travel is much better than some of the other keyboards I see out there.
What I don't like the most is that WiFi takes like 3 mins after everything loads up to connect. I did remove all the HP crap. So, not sure if it's because of that. The drivers are upto date too. If anyone has a solution, please let me know.
Overall, I know I am losing out on a better screen, keyboard, and probably battery life too. Chrome doesn't seem to be as good with so little RAM. So, that doesn't cut it. Now, I have an insane amount of RAM (32).
I only got a new PC because my surface pro's screen started acting up. I got a pleasant surprise. My Office 2019 gray market license transferred during the initial setup.
I may have liked your configuration better but I also got a good deal with Target PM. I also don't think Win 11 is as bad as people make it out to be. So, I guess I am biased for other reasons. I don't mean to travel with this laptop. I would definitely keep the HP if I was planning to move it around a lot.
