So...
This has roughly the multicore performance of a Raspberry PI 4b.

A little perspective.
The multicore performance of this "laptop" also similar to the single core performance of an iPhone 7.
A 6-7 year old cellphone can beat this with one core.

$200 off would be a good deal if this were a usable laptop. But you only want to get this if your prepared to load Linux or Chrome OS on it and tinker.

Who ever thought this was worth $300 to start with was sniffing glue.
Link to glue?
I have a J3355 based mini-computer that has been more than useful. Keep it to one task and it is good. This will be a good shop computer without the need for moving a monitor.

What else can you get for $99? Link?

I mean yes this is limited. But should be usable. 768p not bad for 11". I use a Chromebook with this Celeron and it is not bad at all. This should be fine if you just browse the web or play some child games. You can add a SD card for more storage. Sure you will have to close apps to open others the Ram will be a problem.

If you load Linux it is a steal. Were this a Chromebook the specs are fine.

I remember laptops with 2GB of RAM and that seemed a lot. Of course 10 or so years ago.

Your latter use case, rating this deal a steal if the end user will be loading an alternative OS like Linux, is a fair use case for this device. However, your earlier statement seemed to compare the performance of this CPU in Windows to that of a similarly equipped Chromebook. This is a straw man [youtube.com]. in that while this CPU is actually a solid choice for ChromeOS's lightweight version of Linux, Windows fails to excel on Atom CPUs and also suffers somewhat in 4GB of RAM (so combining them in one system doesn't exactly produce a great user experience).

This is certainly a good bucket of parts for $100. And I could certainly support any argument that clarified that by for the kids what is meant is for the kids to learn how to load an operating system that could be productive on this limited hardware. However there's a pretty wide gap between those systems that can run Windows and those that do so well enough to be someone's daily driver Windows PC. Although this PC certainly meets the requirements for the former, the Kano should not be considered a proper candidate for anyone's daily driver Windows PC.

The best Windows portable tablet at $100? Sure, but that's basically a category full of choices whose best first step is uninstall Windows.

Good luck!
Jon

It's an educational device. I personally paid like $65 for it and my younger children had fun learning about parts etc. Crap I can try and teach them with real pc components but it wouldn't stick. This is a dumbed-down modular point of view with friendly guides and colors.
All in all I like those $40 piper pi Minecraft kits we saw a few years ago much better, since they incorporate the gpio, but this was worth what I paid. For $100 yeah I'd like it to be more capable but then again I try not to expect much out of toys.

It would be interesting to see if the Kano proves to be an upgrade. I suspect functionally the systems will "feel" the same. One feature in favor of the Kano in the shop is the total lack of a fan. However, this could also limit the top speed of the Kano's N4020 (which can go much faster than that of the J3355, assuming decent thermal management).

Good luck!

Sooo I bought this at this price a few months ago without realizing it's not a real laptop nor portable. Parts are kinda hanging out and it's meat to be on a desk? It would be fun with say 8-9yr old to put together and learn some parts in a kid friendly way, but then once booted that kid may be disappointed with performance or lack of ability to play games. I have a 4.5yr old so I may set it up for her when I get a proper desk for her but not sure if she's advance yet. Also, Windows isn't all that kid friendly? Yeah, so it's still in box mostly and i even bough the add on web-cam.

768P per the Microsoft site. This was with a lower grade N4000 but super likely it is the same display.

I see this logic a lot, and I disagree with the implication that the only valid comparisons have to be the exact same price or less. Paying $100 more, twice as much, for something you're going to get hundreds of hours of use out of, is absolutely worth it. The discussion around deals should be around what is worth it, not arund adhering to lines drawn in the sand.

You always can get more for more.

What then is the purpose of any deal.

Twice as much is a lot. I doubt you can get all that much better for $200 anyway.

Once again just an empty statement.

This is not for someone who plans on using it all the time. Though it might well work if you just browse and such and do not use multiple tabs. You could watch youtube on it no problem.

yeah MSRP is plain silly. Worth a hundred, I had it for a month at this price and it was like a little streaming box. My TCL reported 4K but can't be sure that wasn't upscaled over HDMI. I dumped S mode on Win10. Runs good for the price. I did grab the cam for $10.
