You put the controller on the stand and then pickup the stand with the controller on it and play. To help with it not falling off you can use some tape to keep the controller from slipping off while you play.

It uses a rechargeable battery pack instead of regular batteries. When you're done with the game, you sit it on the recharging stand so it can recharge. Pretty simple to understand.

Yes, if you buy the latest model version. It includes one Battery and the back lid for use it either on Xbox One controllers or Xbox Series S/X controllers.

Is it OK to leave it charging on the stand all the time when not in use or will that degrade the battery? Otherwise I can leave it off and only charge when needed.
