These did get as low as $429 before X-Mas. I am hoping to pick a pair up for under $400...or wait for version 2 (supposedly in the next year). Who knows...still great headphones IF you primarily use a Mac.

Apple is about to release Airpods Pro 2 with lossless audio which is a key feature missing from the Airpods Max (if they could have added this feature via software they would have done it with the release of lossless music on Apple Music)
Once that comes out they will probably just release another Airpods Max and discontinue this model to address the lossless audio, horrible charging / case situation, poor discharging while not in use, and condensation in the ear cups
I bought these about a month or two ago, used them quite a few times. Sound is amazing, noise cancelation is amazing, comfort is amazing.... but I had to return them. They lose about 25% of power sitting in their case each week, not being used. This was a deal killer for me as I would keep them in my travel bag and not use them for weeks+ gaps at a time. I would not be not happy to get on an airplane and have then with dead batteries. So back to using my Bose 700s. I will wait for the 2nd generation to be released which I am sure will have a new and improved case as well as have this issue fixed. It's a known issue if you google it.
If you plan to charge these often and don't kept them ready to go for travel, I would say you should buy them.
