I've owned all sorts of different luggage, at varying price points, and it all eventually fails. If you're lucky, your bag will fail from wear-and-tear. If you're unlucky, it'll get dropped/smashed/caught on your very first trip and fail catastrophically. Now, you might be thinking "sure, but the more expensive bags will resist damage better", but this really hasn't been my experience at all.
You might also be thinking, "but the more expensive bags have a better warranty, and the manufacturer will fix them", and that's partially true, but you usually have to mail the bag to them at your expense, and only then find out whether they want to cover the damage. Some manufacturers do have repair facilities in large cities where you can bring the bag, and if you live near one of these, that might be an option. I've had mixed results with repairs. Away states in their warranty policy that you must mail the bag to them at your expense and then they'll get it back to you within 90 days. That's a lengthy while to potentially wait without a bag, in my opinion.
My current luggage is a 2-piece hard-sided set made by Traveler's Choice, which I bought on-sale at a Costco for $100. These bags have survived amazingly well. On my last trip, the checked bag experienced what must have been a severe impact, and dented inwards. I popped the dent back out, and it seems fine. That's the heaviest damage it has acquired in about 4 years, which might be the longest I've had a bag for. If it breaks, I'll just buy a new one. I can do that 3 or more times before I reach the purchase price of one of these bags.
