I use calcium chloride. Primarily because the areas I "salt" are near lawn and garden beds. Additionally, calcium chloride is more effective at melting at lower temperatures than sodium chloride.

We typically use this Calcium Chloride and Magnesium Chloride blend, $8.98 for 50lbs at Sam's Club. Works great down to -15 degrees. We always keep at least one bag of the pricier pure calcium chloride ice melt around in the event of a bad ice storm, but this usually costs $20+ for 50lbs.
