Here, we use firm and never had any issues - just don't tell your dentist. Don't need much cleaning, got very good gums and no problems. Barely floss, so that's not the reason for good periodental health.
Dentists tell you to use soft b/c it doesn't clean your teeth surface or gets stuff between teeth. In the end, more $$$ for them.
