It's more of a decent closed back headphone with a mic that happens to be attached.
I have these and it has a decent soundstage despite being closed back. Also, it has a separate ground for the mic which prevents ground loops when plugging the headphone into an amp/DAC and the mic into the motherboard. I recommend getting the Dekoni choice earpads for them to greatly improve the comfort (although prices for them seem to have gone up).
It doesn't take a lot of power so you don't need a dedicated amp/DAC to run them, but obviously like most headphones it will benefit from one. Even something cheap like a Sonata HD Pro or Schiit Fulla.
For a closed headset this one is pretty good. It does sound better with a dac. Mic is better than most gaming headsets. For the price i do think the audeze penrose are the better buy. If you don't mind wireless.
Reviews are great on newegg for this. This is too much for the typical gamer. But for the target market, you still have options of buying just purely the headphones like the Beyerdynamic DT990 (pro or non pro) and just buying a mic attachment, but you lose the benefits of having a separate ground for the mic.
Nice headset but it's tough to go back to a headset after using a standalone mic. They sound so much better and you can get a Samson Q2U or Audio Technica AT2005USB for $40-50 and then use any headphones you want.
But if you're in the market for a headset (with a mic) this is one of the best ones under $300.

Already lost most of the gaming crowd due it being over $200. Just stating it's more than just a gaming headset.
Also, not here to push product, just giving info so people can make their own decision.
If you're getting that 1k check you probably shouldn't be spending it on non-essentials…
