Want to know the same, but I'm really just looking for a cheap wifi photo frame. I already have a Prime account for photos.
Gen 1s are a mixed bag of QC. I managed to get a free refurb one to replace my original because of screen tearing.
Even the "new" one's screen gets... funny. Flashes, gets superimposed on itself... not a well made devide. Show gen 2 is night and day better.
Anyway, it sucks really badly. First of all, if you're new to the show ecosystem, forget it. Its a bad ecosystem. If you like more screens to view unsolicited ads on, this is the product for you.
Otherwise, dots are superior. Dots only give you ads when you ask innocent questions (BY THE WAY I CAN ORDER YOU A NEW MARITAL AID ANYTIME when you ask to turn the lights up).
Realistically, the use cases for the screen are abysmal. Unless you need a visual timer for your kitchen, stick to the audio-only devices with no cameras.

Torture to think about.
One strategy to use, if you get it and it's not too slow to return.. don't get any updates and keep it that way. at the end of the product cycle, the last few updates pretty much always change devices to usable to unusable.

My personal experience is they all suck, buy a fire tablet and a speaker. Amazon has locked down all the shows in such a mind bogglingly stupid way. Want to watch plex? Tough luck, want to use the browser to visit a website you like, tough luck.
That being said if you understand what it can and can't do this is a good price, it will go end of life soon, whatever that means as it will still do everything it currently can just won't get any new tricks.
