While Samsung details some of the reasons why trade in would be disqualified (damaged, broken, non-working), from previous deals it's said that most any headset will be accepted for trade in. Considering how inexpensive cheap earphones can be, it's still probably best to send in a pair that's working and not obviously falling apart, rather than take even a small risk they'd not be accepted and loose out on $50.
