Even if it stops getting updates in two years, you can install a Chromium version that gets updated periodically.
Beware. June 2024 is the AUE on this model. For those that don't understand what this means it means that in approximately 2 years this Chromebook will become unupdateable and you will be compromising your security if you use it after that date. This is Google e-junk.
For $40 I wouldn't even be mad for very long if it died next month.…

All I need is a system to transfer files from my CFExpress card reader to a USB SSD drive. I want to have something to backup my photos and videos taken by my Canon R5.
Will this work? Never tried to use a chromebook for this purpose.
Processor is 664 passmark score, on par with Atom processors and less than most Core2 Duo chips from 2009. 4GB of RAM is good but dear god how is this even usable today?

I have a Celeron Chromebook and as long as you know that it's not an i7 you're fine.
My main use is primarily internet browsing and the occasional Google docs & sheets work.
Never had any issues with it being slow using it this way.
For $40 you can't expect to be gaming on it ...although Stadia should work fine.....

Passmark isn't a great benchmark. The Celeron N3060 was a pretty common Chromebook CPU and good enough for plenty of web browsing. You don't need much power when you don't need to run Windows. It is bad, but if you need a computer for school/web browsing and you're legitimately strapped for cash, this will get that job done.

$40 for 2 years worth of security updates, that's not a bad deal, specially considering there are smartphones costing upwards of $250 that only guarantee 3 years of security updates.
Also after the 2 years are up there will be a ton of options to install open source OS

This is also the model that I along with others forced HP to both repair and provide use with a mediating tool - there is a known problem with the barrel plug. It is too thin and cracks easily. Then an unsuspecting user may shove it in, shorting the broken pins and starting a fire. As long as you are aware, and are an adult user, should not be a problem.
As for the chagrin expressed here... yes, agreed, but dude, it's $40.
It'd be awesome if chromebooks could be repurposed as a KVM for a homelab setup. Meaning HDMI could be input. I guess there is serial-usb? Any feedback if folks have that use case? Preferred chrome book apps that act as client for serial port Comm?

No malice intended, I have a Windows tablet with double the passmark score that is literally unusable due to maxed out CPU usage with a single tab open. $40 to purchase something impossible to use is pointless. I'm unfamiliar with Chromebooks-- apparently they require much less CPU to be functionally usable.
