While part of the price is to pay for the 5 year warranty (like Festool), it is a good price for what is the so called 'gold standard' manufactured in England. Granted, for the average user like me, it certainly appears to be stupid money for a temp probe.

Although made in China, with part of a second difference, this $42 Lavatools Javelin[amazon.com] is almost as fast as the Thermapen. Personally and since I can wait 3 more seconds for a reading, I have been pretty happy with this $8 ThermoPro TP01A[amazon.com].... but this $18 folding ThermoPro[amazon.com] would be fine as well. Anyone that has grilled for awhile, is already rather accurate with the doneness of a steak or a burger, but for people like me, a probe comes in handy for like a meatloaf.
