These are very good sounding professional headphones, among the best. They are also known to be the most comfortable, making long sessions easy. They do not have directional audio or multiple drivers, that would be software dependent. They are popular in pro audio circles, and I'd be surprised if at least some of your fave streamers don't use them. They also do not have a mic at all. Lastly, the impedance (80 ohms) pretty much require a headphone amp to drive them well. There is no comparison as far as gaming headsets in the price range that I know of. If good audio is your primary concern, these are definitely on the short list, and they are usually around $50 more. Add a cheap headphone amp like the Fosi Q4 and a USB mic (the one listed now on SD for $28 is fine if you're okay with the stand) and you're good to go.

Hope that helps.
You don't need an amp for the 80 ohm version for the 250 ohm version you need one.

Are these good for gaming? Directional audio? What's a good comparable gaming headset?

Okay, fair enough. 80 Ohm can be driven okay with motherboard outputs. I would say barely, but it will work, and it depends on your motherboard's internal components. My kid was skeptical too, until he got a Q4 for his Audio Technicas. It didn't hurt that I paid for it 😂 IMO, if you are going to spend $100 on headphones that are normally $150, definitely spend that savings on the headphone amp. There is no way you'll be disappointed. Just my opinion, of course. Do you, and relative to your budget. I'd get the headphones even if I couldn't afford the extra for a headphone amp at the moment.

Disagree. Most modern smart devices have enough amperage to get 99% of what these cans can do, especially if they're using a USBC to 3.5mm adapter.

At 80 ohm I wouldn't be comfortable making a blanket statement like this. Do they need an amplifier? No, if your only goal is to produce sound. Do they need an amplifier to be properly driven for optimal sound quality and volume level? For many setups, the answer is going to be yes.
It's also worth noting that if you're using onboard audio, the impedance rating is usually only good for the rear audio jack and typically you have to enable a "high impedance" setting in the driver software to take advantage of it.

I want these, but I rarely use any of the headphones I already have (I prefer speakers). Are these significantly better than my Sony MDR-V6, with Beyer pads, or my Philips shp9500s, or my Grado SR60? I know those last 2 are open, so not exactly a fair comparison, but the Sony's are closed.

As someone who has owned the 990, 880 and 770, I guess its obvious but the 880 sits nicely between the other 2. If gaming I'd lean towards the 770 for the bass. Music I like the 880. I found the 990 to be ear piercing. It's one of the only pair of headphones I've ever gotten rid of.

Yea I have the 990s now and they may as well be apart of my funko pop collection as they never get used. Everyone seems to point me towards the 880s as a replacement
