When will iPhones just switch over to usb-c is the real question
2023 according to latest rumors. I'm hoping for it to happen because backing an iPhone on a physical hard drive can take 10+ hours and if interrupted, you lose all progress. It's pretty ridiculous to take so long to backup ~128GB in 10+ hours in 2022.

It's been a long time coming. I'm glad they're finally considering it.

Back in 2012 when they introduced the lightning cable during the iPhone keynote, they said it would last them through the next decade. Now in 2022, it's about darn time they move on from it. It really needed replacing around the time they started putting Thunderbolt on their laptops and removed all other ports. Then they put them on the iPads. They'll milked their royalties from the MFi licensing long enough!

question is what could they replace that revenue stream with if they gave up lightning

Easy. Market their USB-C cables as somehow being superior (or magical!) than all the rest or put a special chip in them that are required for them to work.
Typical IPhone users in the comments. Look at the capacity of the battery case and the capacity of the XS Max phone. It's not meant to full charge your phone, but to give you a slight top up and to extend the life a bit before you find a charger lol.
I got the iPhone X one when it was on sale on Amazon for $7.99, and returned it immediately. A full charge of the battery charged the phone less than 30%. Not sure if this size is any better. After all, size does matter.
Hi, from a business standpoint, they won't. Or will they go all wireless. Apple makes about $4/each when they certify an accessory like a cable or anything with a lightning port… as MFi (Made for iPhone/iPad). They literally make billions and billions. If they switched to USB, they would lose all these completely as you can get these cables everywhere. They would pay the EU $5+ billion dollars in fines (if I remember correctly) for not making it universal as promised then to ditch this segment of income completely.
you should at least excluded the current gen of ipad air/pro that takes typc C charger.
