Although I love the convenience, the proprietary software required to run these is only OK. Honeywell should've allowed it to be open sourced so other apps could be developed. They took it a step further and require your app to go thru their servers in order to change the temp. The app even states "communicating directly with the thermostat." Which is incorrect.

I don't find Neat to be any better. I can change my own temperature, I don't need a stupid robot deciding when my house should be warmer.

That being said, I do believe this is the cheapest I've seen WiFi thermostats go for.

As long as your furnace board has a C hookup (or +24v somewhere, same thing) you can hook the c wire up to that in the furnace and at the thermostat. My parents furnace had like 3 runs of wire spliced together so I pulled a new thermostat wire but the existing had extra leads I could have hooked up as well. Most furnances should have the manual in a pouch or you can usually find it online to find the C terminal. Make sure you disconnect power and wait a while before fiddling inside the furnace. It's not rocket science but it's not for everyone to get in there and mess with it.

AFAIK this doesn't support room sensors? It's basically a WIFI version of the basic 5-1-1 honeywell.

Agree the software sucks and is sometimes a little shaky on reliability. Also amusing that it's basically unchanged since I last had one of these uh, I dunno, 10 years ago probably now? I bought one of these for my parents soon to be sold house on Amazon last time they were cheap (like you say no WIFI thermostat comes even close to as cheap as these as refurbs) there and it came looking as new other than the packaging stating it was a refurb. Ecobee is the only thermostat I've owned that was smart and I felt like was really significantly better than the others.

The Emerson Sensi can be had for a similar price, doesn't need a c wire and has a better app. https://www.ebay.com/itm/38489273...media=COPY

I had 1 didn't last about 6 months. Replaced it now after 3 months it losing Internet connection a lot.
The first one did the same thing finally would not connect at all.
For the price it would be worth a try. It might work for you.
I do see a lot of Refurbished units for a cheap price that says a lot.

Before buying any thermostat it's critical that due diligence is done to know your hvac system. Is it a 2 zones system with dampers, or is heat pump part of it or what is the control board of your system. And of course is there a c 24v wire. Honeywell today is the Allied signal-Honeywell merger of 1999.Honeywell is a very well known brand so Allied Signal although was the buyer it chose the Honeywell name for the merged company.. There are many super smart thermostats like the Ecobee and Nest Learning with all bells and whistles which most people do not need.

I bought this for similar price used on Amazon. Works great, but seeing up on wifi was tricky. I figured out that it was confused by my mesh eero setup. I unplugged the two satellite routers and only the did it properly connect to the main router. Once connected, it has worked great on the mesh network. The app to control it is pretty generic, but it does everything I need. It makes daily programming much easier compared to programming on the unit itself.

Keep in mind, everything this thermostat does and every control you input gets recorded by Honeywell's servers. They could architect these things so you could control it over wifi directly, with no middle-man, but no. They're designed this way solely so they can capture your metadata.
