I have a $3k desktop at home but I spend 8 hours a day working on an i7-3770 and i5-3550 machines lol... they just keep working and it's hard to give them up when they work so well.
But my spreadsheets are getting to the point where I think having more threads would be helpful... 600,000 lines of text do take a while to process and the seconds add up...

I'm assuming your working on dell Optiplex type machines, if so, DDR3 is super cheap on eBay. You can kit out a machine with upto 32GB on those if you want. Preferaby just get 4gb DDr3 1600 from Samsung or sk hynix on eBay, get the cheapest non ECC memory version you can find. 13-20$ a piece depending on the day. Cheap upgrade to 16gb would make those old systems not feel so pathetic. And of course a good ssd helps.
Or better yet, buy another pre built, the dell precision t1700 on eBay. You can find one pretty much ready to go 100-150$ with a 4 core 8 thread Intel 4th gen xeon that's equivalent to an i7 4790 that runs ECC memory. 4th gen Intel is surprisingly faster than 3rd gen for some reason.
Or another one, precision 3620 comes with Intel 6th gen, ddr4 memory and can run m.2 ssd. Those are becoming cheap too on eBay.
I still have a B450 mainboard and some DDR4 but no GPU.

So, think about it before you plan to build a PC for long-term use/upgrade path.
