The little saw is great for plywood and lopping off the ends of 2x4s.

Some may find it a little underpowered, but as long as you cut straight and use a sharp blade it shouldn't bog down much.

Is a 5.5" circular saw practical/ useful? Just had a 6.5" circular saw die on me and would like to replace it but that size doesn't seem useful for much.

I have found that my 5.5" from them didn't always cut all the way through 2x4s. I usually had to flip it over. I upgraded to a 7.25 for this reason. If you aren't doing much with 2x4, then it shouldn't matter.

You must've been cutting some really old lumber, because a modern 2x4 is 1-1/2" thick and the depth of cut on this little saw is 1-11/16".

Great little saw. I have one along with my full sized Ridgid Octane, but reach for the little Ryobi most of the time, unless I'm cutting some demanding stock.

I have this little 5.5" circular saw, along with a corded 7-1/4 Milwaukee and cordless 7-1/4 Ridgid Octane and love it. Use it much more than the other two. The Ryobi is the only one I take to to work for when I need to cut 2x4's, sheet goods, ledger boards, etc. I don't need a circular saw everyday, but for my needs it's great. Light and plenty of power for these tasks and takes up almost no room in my tool boxes.

You either have the depth set too high or you're cutting old lumber which was actually 2" x 4"

If you're worried about power I recommend a corded 7 1/4 circular saw with a Diablo blade. Will cut just about any wood you throw at it .
