Why have something on the outside? Why not have shades inside?

just diy tint film your sunny windows
i have 20% grey on all my northeast windows.
it makes a world of difference, is easy to do
and costs less than a tenth of this OP's gimmick.

best you google flat glass tinting
(it's pretty much the same used in cars)
there are a few cheap tools you need
and to understand tint film differences.

best general advice is,
do NOT buy anything self adhesive, and
always go darker than you think you need.

good luck.

I can't seem to find my invoice, but I purchased a 100' roll of Llumar to do all my windows. I seem to remember it being around $200 to $500. I just found the widest window so I could do it all from 1 roll.

I had to call Llumar to find a distributor.

Anyone know how I could motorize their $100 ones? My living room faces the west & I hate going out there everyday to roll 3 of them down.

How hard is it to take out in the winter when you want to warm up your room.

tint is more about vision and uv blocking

if heat blocking is your need, plant a tree/bush in front of your
sunny window that won't have leaves on it during the winter.

tint film is not hard to remove, but you won't want to reuse the
same old film come spring. if you really want to try reusing it,
then buy a thicker mylar film (higher quality) then needed, as
cheaper thinner films will shred apart while trying to remove.
never remove film while dry - always soapy water wet it first.

Have concrete outside the window so planting a tree isn't going to work.

I've done research...

1st step - to motorize it https://youtu.be/f3wmWWnMUAY
2nd step - Is to find a motor to spin it similar to above that is small enough to mount on top
3rd step - connect said motor/ actuator to https://www.ebay.com/itm/383478804738?

4th step - is to install a rail/ other system? to make sure it doesn't blow in the wind once its down.
5th step- spray paint everything the same color as exterior walls to make it blend in

I've considered swapping out my window screens in the summer with solar screen (2 different sets, one for winter and one for summer (nothern Illinois)). But, I don't know if I like the idea of having "dark" windows 100% of the time during the summer. I also wouldn't want to do all the windows, which would make the house look odd.

Sun shades are great on a deck or lanai where you need occasional shade (think sun setting and blinding you while sitting outside).

Tinting windows has drawbacks. It can void the window warranty because double paned windows get very hot and their seals crack. I have been trying to figure out a way to buy plexiglass, attach the tint to that, and then the plexiglass to the frames people use for solar screens. This would keep the tint from touching your windows and also be removable in the winters. I haven't hard any luck with anyone doing this that has shared it on the internet.
