HP has two Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake laptops on sale - I was shopping for a gift, and these seemed to be among the best deals on 12th Gen laptops in the $550-650 range.

I know that Intel 11th Gen (Tiger Lake) laptops with similar specs can be gotten for $400-500, but jumping from the 4 cores of Tiger Lake to 10 the cores of Alder Lake (2 performance + 8 efficiency) for the extra ~$100-150 may appeal to folks. If you have Perks at Work/EPP, you save about an extra $40.

EDIT: Thanks to BeigeStew7045 for sharing a potential coupon code - I didn't get it to combine with the EPP discount, but it may be helpful for folks who don't have EPP

Quote from BeigeStew7045 :
You can also use code 5MDSHP to take an extra 5% off laptops $599 + so that will bring the price of the $650 laptop down to $617.50 or for the $580 laptop just add on an accessory that that is more than $20 (like the HP wireless mouse Z3700) and you can then use the coupon to take 5% off.
EDIT #2: Thanks to wildpig1234 for sharing a deal on i3 configuration of the 14" Pavilion model for $480 ($448 with EDU/EPP discount):

https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp...-4z1x4av-1
  • HP Pavilion Laptop - 14t-dv200
  • CPU: Intel® Core™ i3-1215U (up to 4.4 GHz, 10 MB L3 cache, 6 cores, 8 threads) + Intel® UHD Graphics
  • RAM: 8 GB DDR4-3200 SDRAM (2 X 4 GB)
  • Storage: 256 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD
  • You still get all the goodies like two sodimms, one HDMI 2.1, one usb-c with DP and PD, backlit keys, 1080p IPS screen
  • More details are in the Thread Wiki

Summary of the original two laptops on sale:
  • The 14" model is for $580
  • The 15.6" model is for $650
  • Both have 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a 256GB NVMe SSD drive, and a 1080P display. RAM and SSD seem like they are replaceable (non-soldered).
  • 14" model has a slightly slower CPU - its a Core i5-1235u vs Core i7-1255u
    • the i5 has lower clock speeds, as well as 80 graphics EUs instead of the full 96 EUs
    • however, both have 2 Performance Cores and 8 Efficiency cores - 10 cores total.
  • 14" model seems to have USB-C Charging, HDMI 2.1, and Bang and Olufsun audio, whereas 15.6" model does not

If you are on a budget, you can get the Pavilion 14 with i3-1215u for $480 or $448 with edu discount This pricing is now OVER! IT's now $650 for the i3-1215u!

You still get all the goodies like two sodimms, one HDMI 2.1, one usb-c with DP and PD, backlit keys, 1080p IPS screen

https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp...-4z1x4av-1
Just click add to cart. No need to change anything!

Please note that i3-1215u is MUCH improved over the old i3-11th gen and older. It has 6 cores/8threads (4E and 2P w hyperthread) It is faster than the i5-1135G7 in benchmarks
See here:
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Com...vsm1842621
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/comp...4754vs3830

Also, the new UHD igpu in the i3 is 3X faster than the UHD 620 igpu that we all hated . This new UHD is as fast as the igpu in the ryzen 3500u and while not as fast as intel Xe, is certainly much better than what it used to be!
There is however one big tradeoff: you MUST run windows 11. Windows 10 does not know how to schedule tasks with P and E cores and you will get very bad multicore performance trying to run intel 12th gen cpu with P and E cores on windows 10

Your comment cannot be blank.

I am fully aware of these facts. The 14in in this post IS a Pavilion model with the better chassic while the 15in posted here IS NOT a Pavilion.

The BETTER 14in one is actually cheaper than the 15in so that is what I was emphasizing here!
The 14in is actually a great chassic because it has the hdmi 2.1, as well as usb-c with DP and PD, two sodimm slots and backlit keys.

So if you want to go even cheaper (but still have all the great above base features), try this customizable page:

https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp...-4z1x4av-1

The base with i3-1215u with 6 cores, 8 thread is actually as fast as the older i5 11th gen u cpu. so you can get that for $451 or $420 edu discount and save but still getting all the above features in this great chassic!

12th gen 28 watt is the gold standard. Like what Dell put in the new XPS line.

The 14 in model is actually very good price for a 12th gen u cpu. it's definitely a better model than the 15in in term of connectivity as well as price.

the 14in has usb-c with Displayport and power delivery as well as HDMI 2.1 and also two sodimm slots and backlit keyboard.

15in does not have usb-c with displayport or power delivery and hdmi 1.4 only. also the igpu in the i7 fo the 15in is only slightly faster than i5 with the cpu only being slightly faster in single core and not much faster in multicore because it's likely throttled anyway.

So all in all, the 14in is a much better deal imo. that i5 12th gen cpu is about equal in multicore to 5500u ryzen cpu.

Nice deal. With no separate graphics card, I would go for the 15" model Product number 687Y9UA as that is the top of the line for built in graphics.

Unknown is what upgrade options does this have for M.2?

Lets learn a bit or read the specification ab bit before posting technical details here. HP Pavilion series, both 15 and 14 inch variant, have full functional Type-C port (Data, DisplayPort, Power Delivery) and HDMI 2.1. You are confusing it with HP Essential Series where the laptops are just referred as HP 15 or HP 14.
Here is one example of HP Pavilion 15 2022:

I would not! The 15in model listed here is not a Pavilion model which means it has a worse feature set. you have no 4K60hz video output on this 15in model.

This 15in is so grossly overpriced for its lack of features that i am really scratching my head on why HP prices it like this?!? They must be counting on people to only look at "i7-1255u"?

as for the ssd, it's a single nvme m2 slot

You can also use code 5MDSHP to take an extra 5% off laptops $599 + so that will bring the price of the $650 laptop down to $617.50 or for the $580 laptop just add on an accessory that that is more than $20 (like the HP wireless mouse Z3700) and you can then use the coupon to take 5% off.

Thanks! I forgot to mention this since it did not seem to work for me when attempting to combine with the EPP discount.

Thanks for your contributions!

Yeah, I was scratching my head a bit when I saw the pricing too, as the 14-inch seems to be on a more premium/modern/upscale platform but is priced lower.

I would recommend the 14-inch model over the 15-inch model for the reasons you have been stating: better port selection/features (USB charging and HDMI 2.1), better audio, and lower price.

The 15-inch may appeal to folks who want a bit more CPU power and particularly GPU power (as well as a larger screen size).

The problem is that in these laptops, you are gonna get a lot of throttling due to limited cooling so any improved cpu and gpu power is actually even less than the specs on paper.
If you really want a 15in laptop with more cpu power than i5-12th, i would actually recommend this due to the ryzen being more power efficient and therefore less throttling:

https://www.costco.com/hp-pavilio...58348.html

People are more likely to pay higher price for a smaller more premium laptop. HP completely got it backward on this one!
