Frustratingly, the hardware is almost exactly the same between the two. The only major difference is in the features that the software provides when it detects the "Elite" version hardware connected.
So instead of "pro" and "elite", it's really more "nerfed" and "standard" versions.
The software features that are enabled with the elite version are significant, and are arguably the only reason to buy this product. That's how they get'cha.
I purchased the elite a couple years ago on a pretty good sale for $98. I used it to synchronize calibration between multiple displays of different display types that I use on my graphics and CAD workstation. (Multiple monitors and four separate 43 in 4k TVs)
I've only used it twice since then when replacing/upgrading a monitor.
If you don't need a dedicated device for frequent calibration of monitors, I would recommend that you first inquire at your local library or other public resources to see if they have this or similar device available for checkout. 👍
Bought the Pro during a prior sale and am very happy with it. Seeing the side-by-side comparison really showed how much better the colors are with this. Easy to set up, and even though I don't calibrate as regularly as they suggest, it stays looking great. If you are like me and unlikely to do it regularly make sure to set the reminder interval at whatever the max is or it gets annoying.

Wow, never thought about that. I always just wished you could rent these things for $20-30 dollars as opposed to buying something I'll use one every other year.

Must be some library, never heard of that!
Camera rental places do let you rent them for that price range ($~20). Places like adorama in NYC even give you extra days (thur-sun) for a one day fee.
FIY it's still $170 on amazon, I finally gave in and bought it.

edit: found https://spyderx.datacolor.com/blo...st-for-me/ [datacolor.com], looks like main difference is projector support and dual monitor matching
Can't tell if it's all just software differences. I want to just use it with DisplayCal.
EDIT: Looks like same thing just software differences:
