One thought I have is that $53 shipped to my door is less than a single rental of a carpet extractor at Home Depot. How many times would you say you were able to use yours before they broke? Because honestly for what this costs and how often I would use an item like this it might be worth it anyway even if I know it is a throwaway item.

Yep, not much has changed I guess... had an older Hoover upright rug cleaner and I had the same damn problem. In fact, there were so many problems with the water/detergent canister, that Hoover replaced mine free under warranty and it STILL ended up with same issue shortly after I installed new canister. The only rug cleaners that have been bullet proof have been those little Bissell Green Machines and that old fashioned big block looking scrubber they rent out - that Rug Doctor brand. Costco had actually sold them in-store at one time.
