The average person that occasionally needs/uses an auto center punch for wood or non-ferrous metals can make good use of the General with perhaps some lubricant and sanding any rough surfaces on the internal parts. If it is not hitting hard enough, you can also stretch the spring a touch... but that also means you need more grip. Should you get it, click it 50 or 100 times to make sure there are no immediate factory defects. It is $8 and mass produced, so no, it is not a Starrett.
Although I do have older Starrett's, the OP, etc., I also have the General auto punch with the red bulb on end of handle that works well after a slight mod and quite comfortable on the hand palm to use if you have oil or anything slick on your hands, arthritis, etc. Neiko and many others make/sell the same/similar tool.
