    Because it is cheap. Particle board and thin square tubing.

    Definitely worth looking on the used market in your local area first. Solid desks can be had pretty cheap, and even if you do not have a truck renting one from Home Depot is $20 for the hour. For the same price you can have something that will not be in a landfill in a few years.
